Mind On Civic Summer Writing Fellows

A short writing mentorship program where students write their own op-ed or personal blog post for publication on Mind On Civic.

Information

      The Mind On Civic Summer Writing Fellows program is a unique opportunity for high school students to develop their writing skills while exploring important civic issues. Fellows will write and publish their own pieces on topics related to social justice, education, mental health, policy, and more. Each fellow will receive mentorship and the chance to have their work featured on Mind On Civic's platform. It is offered both in-person and virtually.

What You’ll Do

  • Write and publish on the Mind On Civic website your own op-ed or blog post on a topic you’re passionate about (related to Mind On Civic themes like civic engagement, education, mental health, or social justice)

  • Work with mentors (journalists, writers, and educators) to refine your writing, improve your argumentation, and craft your voice

  • Collaborate with other fellows in writing workshops and group brainstorming sessions

  • Share your work with peers and have it featured on the Mind On Civic blog, helping to amplify your voice and ideas on a larger platform

  • Learn about the writing and publishing process, from idea development to final edits, and gain insight into how writing shapes public discourse

What You’ll Gain

  • Writing skills that help in both personal and professional development

  • Leadership and networking opportunities within a community of young activists and writers

  • A letter of recommendation or certificate upon completing the program, which can be used for college applications or job opportunities

Project Timeline (Tentative)

  • July–August:
    • Fellows will work through a 4-6 week period, with weekly writing workshops, feedback sessions, and writing milestones

  • Final Deadline:
    • Each fellow’s piece will be due for publication at the end of the program

Application

Who It’s For

  • Incoming and current high school (grades 9 through 12), and college students who are passionate about writing and social issues

  • Students who want to explore the intersection of writing, activism, and education

  • No prior writing experience required, just a willingness to learn and share your perspective

  • Ideal for those who are interested in journalism, advocacy, public policy, or creative writing
